makin’ your life easier :-)

Hi there,

Hope you’re doing well.

Today I wanted to talk about a job interview concept that could have you smiling

ear-to-ear like a love-struck teenager…. or it could have you beating your fists

against the desk and pulling your hair out in frustration.

It’s that important, but often gets overlooed in our search for “the perfect company”…

Here it is:

Look for employers that are looking for you!

That’s right, you want to (first) go after companies that WANT and NEED to hire someone

THIS WEEK.

Let’s take a new perspective on the whole “job search” thing… let’s look at the job interview

process through the EMPLOYER’S EYE…

Let’s say a really good salesperson, Bob, just “up and left” because he found a better company

 to work for…

Let’s Bob guy was making the company ~$2000 a week in new accounts, and bringing

home about 40K per year (from his small salary, and healthy commissions).

Now how do you think that business owner feels?

Probably pretty pissed off… at first. One of his best guys just walked out and “left him hangin”

for the 50K profit he brought in annually. He’s probably steaming (how would you feel if someone

cut your earnings by 50K a year? lol)

But after the initial sting, lets say the boss man calms down and realizes he can go to places like

MONSTER.COM and CAREERBUILDER.COM and have a steady stream of new salespeople

LINED UP to work for him… he’s probably going to be pretty pumped up and excited

Now he knows that not EVERYone will be a great salesperson like Bob, but he trusts his brain to

pick out the few “good apples” that filter through…

And for that he’s excited.

Here’s an inside success tip I’ve learned from studying successful CEOs:

They are perpetual optimists. They have to be, or they’d never make it in business..

Even though he lost 50 a year that Bob was bringing in, he’s probably looking for a 70K + a year

guy or girl when interviwing new hires… someone with potential.

Someone like YOU :-)

You’ve got to realize that this guy WAANTS to hire someone….after all, he needs to show his

investors a positive return every quarter so he’s HOT for new talent…

And he wants someone he would a) be proud to have on his team and b) someone who could pick up right where

Bob left off and take his company even further..

My point… BE THAT GUY OR GIRL.

And look for companies that WANT and NEED your expertise. Not a company where your resume is

gonna go “in the pile by the cash register” or, worse yet, “the circular file” lol.

Job interview training #4- Do you close the Sale?

Hey guys,

Sorry I didn’t post anything in awhile. I usually just post when I have something really good to say. That time is now.

I have a question for you. What do you say at the end of the interview to close the deal? How do you show interest?

When most people hear this they think “I have to close the deal? They already know I’m interested or I wouldn’t have applied for the job.”

I know I know.. I used to think that too. But here’s the thing, companies these days want to know that you’re really interested in the position. People who don’t close are generally NOT hired. Let me repeat that. People who do not close are generally NOT hired. The following is a great way to close, after the interviewer is thanking you for your time and your interest in the company:

“Well, thanks your time too. I’m very interested in the job, and I’d be happy to be able to add my talent to the company. What are our next steps?”

Perfect…now what you’ve done is shown interest in the company. You’ve successfully “closed” the interviewer and now they have to respond to your question and tell you what to do next.

You’ve also done this in a non-needy way. You’re confident without being arrogant. “I’d love to add my talent…” shows you respect yourself as a talented individual, implying that you have options.

I would generally say this after I shake the interviewer’s hand and he or she says: “thanks for your interest in our company.”

I hope that was helpful. Do me a favor and leave a comment below with your feedback. Also, tell me what you are currently having trouble with.

If you haven’t already joined our mailing list, I want you to join right away. I’m going to releasing a lot more valuable step-by-step job search trainings and I wouldn’t want you to miss out. You can do that here: http://impressyourinterviewers.com/index.html

Job interview training #3- “The Magic Follow-up with Interviewers”

Our buddy Jay from the community asked a great question: When should you follow up with recruiters/managers?

This is a burning question for a lot of people. The question is really this from my mind: how can I be persistent (good thing J ) without being annoying (bad thing L )?

Here’s what I do. After I get done with the interview, I send a heart-felt thank you note. Yes, I did say “heart-felt.” Show the interviewer that you’re a real person and that you care about the company. A lot of times, when you communicate in this way, the recruiter will drop their “professional persona” and start communicating like a normal human being.

  1. Time of follow up #1: This should be at the end of the interview. Maybe a few hours after you get back home. I usually say the following:

    1. “Hi Sue. This is Ian from today. I enjoyed our meeting today. Thanks for telling me your story. I really how much you care about helping your team. I wanted to say that I’m still very interested in the position and I look forward to pursuing things further with this company. Have a wonderful day.”

Psychology behind it: I don’t want to try to sell myself again. The interviewer has already heard that in the interview. I want to show interest in the interviewer. Maybe she shared something specific about what she liked about the company and it inspired me. That’s one thing we can connect on and I want to share it back with her. That’s it, nothing too complex.

  1. Let’s say the interviewer showed a ton of interest, but they didn’t respond at all to your thank you note. No problem, happens all the time. I usually call them AT LEAST 3 business days later and if they don’t pick I leave a message:

    1. “Hi Sue, this is Ian from last Wednesday, I wanted to say thank you and that I’m still very interested in the position. I would love to discuss our next steps at your earliest convenience. Have a great day!”

Psychology behind it: A lot of employers, like Microsoft, who I happen to be interviewing with at the moment are very very busy. Sometimes they can’t take your calls or even return your emails, but they are watching your every move (insert evil laugh here). Some employers like to see how interested in the position you are and how easily you’ll start to panic. Don’t let that be you, don’t call 27 times in 1 day! Be calm and confident and call every 4 days until you get a response.

I’m going to be releasing a lot more valuable trainings just like this one and I’d love for you to get on our mailing list so that you’re notified when this happens. You can do that here: http://impressyourinterviewers.com/index.html

Success and Enthusiasm,

Ian Iacocca.

PS: Submit a comment below and give me some feedback. What did you think of the training? What are your biggest fears/frustrations? What do you want to learn?

Job Interview Training #2- How to write an email to a recruiter that sells!

Hey guys,

I hope you enjoyed my last training, if you haven’t seen it, I recommend that you watch the videos here first and then come back to this training.

So last time, I taught you how to join Linkedin.com and find recruiters. Hopefully, you’ve joined and filled out the basic details of education and at least cut/paste your resume on there. Now I want to show you how to reach out to a recruiter, or for that matter anyone who’s email is listed in his or her profile.

Now, if the email is not listed, but it says “Send In-Mail free” this what I would say:

Hello David,

I hope you are doing well.

My name is Ian Iacocca, [what are you currently doing]

My background is in [Sales, Marketing, HR, etc]

I’m really passionate [Used that word J] about becoming a [Sales, Marketing, or HR, etc] representative and contributing a great deal to [company name] for its long-term success.

I want to put my talent into your company and help you increase Sales and contribute to our community.

I want to forward both my resume and cover letter to you. Please send me your email.

Thanks for your time and have a wonderful day! I look forward to hearing from you.

So, let’s go into the psychology of what I just did.

I asked him how he’s doing. Pretty intuitive, but most people skip it and come as rude.

I state my name right away, not much fluff talk. Then I say my background and what I’m currently doing. I used the word “passionate” as shown as in my first video. Here’s another thing that some people may have not caught: I said “long-term,” most companies are concerned about if you’re going to stick around or not. It costs A LOT of money to interview, recruit, and train a new person. The last sentence says that I have a bigger vision in my life: I want to help the entire community. This important because people can see I’m not only in it for the money. I end with a polite thank you and wish the person well, just as I did in the beginning.

Fairly straightforward? Yes, its not rocket science. Now you got everything you need. Go take action and tell me your results. Let me know how it went. Give me some feedback.
